Those two or four years you spend in college are some of the best ones of your life for traveling. You have great friends and roommates to go with, and you don’t have a house, a full-time job, or a family to tie you down. You can pretty much pick up and go whenever you want. Except, of course, for the fact that you have zero money in your bank account. If you really want to travel, though, there are tons of ways to do it on the cheap. Scrape together the extra cash from your part-time job, and use these ideas to make it happen.
1. Road Trip
The classic college trip is a road trip. Yes, gas is expensive right now, but unlike a plane ticket, everyone who goes with you can split the cost. If you only go with two or three other people, you can take a fuel-efficient sedan and be quite comfortable. Before you go, check out trends in gas prices around the country. Pull out your freshman year algebra book and figure up about how much gas you’ll need to get to where you’re going and back, and then estimate a little high. Add in the cost of food and wherever you’re going to stay, and split it up between everyone.
2. Cheap Tickets
If you’re yearning to travel outside the North American Continent and have to fly, you can get cheap plane tickets, too. Check out organizations like the Student Travel Association, which gives deals to students and anyone under the age of twenty-five. Also, buy your tickets about four to six months in advance. Track the ticket prices for a couple of months so that you know what’s high and what’s low.
3. Camping
One great way to save money on where you’re going to stay is to camp. Strap a tent and some sleeping bags to the top of your car, and take off across the nation. As long as you’re visiting areas with camp grounds – of which there are many, even outside major cities – you’re good to go. The fee to pitch a tent near a barbecue pit and a shower house is generally only about $10-$15 a night. If you’re going at a busy camping time of the year, though, you might not be able to get a spot, so call ahead!
3. Couch Surfing
There’s a new travel thing going around right now called couch surfing. Basically, you check out this website, couchsurfing.org, where you can see a bunch of different people all over the world who are willing to have people stay with them at random intervals. You’ll be able to check out what other couch surfers say about the people you’re going to potentially stay with, and you can also check out profiles to see what these people like to do. At worst, you find someone who ends up creeping you out and rush to a hostel for the night, and at best, you meet a new friend who can show you the sites and make your trip that much more memorable. Oh, yeah, and you get a place to stay for free.
